ARRAY

i'm trying to create an array over 1 field.  the field is coming from a file
and is 500 characters long.  I want to break it into 20 elements.
this is what i have done, but it is showing up blanks   it is alpha.   

D ORDER1DS      E DS                  EXTNAME(ORDERPF) 
D   #FLD17              294    793    DIM(20)          


Any ideas?
