Take a look at the parameters that are being passed into/out of the program
and check that they are declared as the same length in all places.  The
most likely cause of this kind of error is internal corruption caused by a
parameter mis-match.  By adding fields to the subfile etc. you change the
place where the corruption occurs.  Sometimes errors of this kind can have
existed in a program for years but because the field(s) being corrupted
didn't matter at that specific point in time it went unnoticed.
