There is still the general belief among users of package software. The belief can be summarized as follows. If I want to stay current on vendor packages it might be easier to compare source if both of them remain in the same language. This will make it easier to do an upgrade. Anything outside of the package I will run through CVTRPGSRC or write from scratch in RPGIV. Now, I am not saying that it will be a valid or invalid concern. But if you are only making a couple of simple changes, like adding or subtracting one additional field to determine on hand, I fail to see how the benefits of RPGIV will outweigh the inability to do a source compare when upgrade time comes. And, yes, I am a RPGIV bigot. I won't write anything new in RPGIII for any reason. And if a program is outside of a package I'll convert it first. This is just a battle I am willing to lose in order to win the war. I think the bigger incentive would be as one person earlier suggested. You either obsolete the RPGIII compiler or price it extra to get the vendors to change. Gee, RPGIII for the S/390 was $199,000 when it first came out. Somewhere in that price range sounds about right. Rob Berendt ================== Remember the Cole! Those who use actually RPG IV seem to have fewer problems converting vendor programs than those who never tried RPG IV... The moral: Keep on preaching. Remember that the midrange arena has always been populated by slow adopters, and they need to hear the news that moving up is a Good Thing many times before they move.
