Thank You Simon. I had a feeling it was something like that. Since I also needed to left justify the string, I just did that first. Eval RawMicr = %trim(RawMicrIn) Quick and easy. Sure wish other operation codes would set the length of variable length fields like eval. Stupid that they don't! My next homework assignment is reading up on Variable Length Fields. Christopher K.
