I know that RPG IV was designed to be compatible with RPG III in this respect, but the original RPG III behaviour is just "how it works", as far as I know. TESTN is well-defined to test a character field for certain specific values. TESTN says a character is "numeric" if the zone is C, D or F, while the system (and RPG) are always happy with a zone of any character from A to F. At the end of the TESTN documentation, it says that it can be used to validate fields before they are used in numeric operations where their use may cause undesirable results or exceptions. In this case, TESTN would reject the value because of the embedded blanks; this is a case where the use of the data would lead to an undesirable result rather than an exception. >What happens when we get George Farr's proposed RANGE-keyword on the >D-statements? >DTLHI# RANGE(0 999999999) - would the above value be an error or not? I don't know - it's something we'd have to decide. But my first thought is that since RPG thinks its value is 1050202, then it is within range, and therefore ok. What if the range was -1 to 1: with the preferred signs, that allows X'D1', X'F0' and X'F1'. Should X'B1' be allowed or not? What about X'C1' that even TESTN likes?
