This solution would only work if you've got the ability to change the
program that you're trying to get the job number for.It would, furthermore, 
have to be re-written for each job that you wanted to use it for, so it
wouldn't make a reusable routine.

But it may make sense, depending on the situation that the original
programmer is trying to solve.

If it does not make sense, why not use the List Spooled Files API
(QUSLSPL) to dump a list of all the spooled files into a user space, and
search for the job name, etc that you require?   

Seems to me that this would solve things quite easily!
