If I'm not mistaken (I've already deleted the previous digest),
Barbara pointed out that under certain circumstances your char
to numeric function will fail. You replied that YOU've had no
problems. OK, maybe you didn't explicitly say Barbara was wrong,
but there was that implication. Furthermore, saying that YOU've
had no problems doesn't mean others won't have problems. I've
tested your procedure with a sample size of one, and 100% of my
tests failed! In fact, it gave exactly the same result as using
"atof".

Anyways, the only point I really wanted to add is that your
procedure (even if it was based on IBM code originally) is really
no better than using "atof" in the C run-time library. Now to be
fair, you make no claims on your web page that it is better than
anything else. But why offer a procedure that doesn't offer at
least a bit of improvement? Actually, I'm very surprised you're
not jumping at the opportunity to fix your code and then
advertise how much better your code is than IBM's!

BTW, where can I find that IBM-written char to num conversion
procedure?
