<humour> We could even format our source code to make shapes and designs. Gee, a whole program in the shape of a smiley face! <endhumour> Rob Berendt ================== Remember the Cole! Not that I would... But I have seen worse back when I debugged C code. For I = 0 to num; x = y(i); EndFor; Since the compiler knows the ';' is the end of that statement, I would assume we could place all our code on one line, with the only limitation, being the record length of our source file. tim -----Original Message----- From: Steve Brazzell [SMTP:steve@brazzell.com] Sent: Thursday, November 02, 2000 2:53 AM To: RPG400-L@midrange.com Subject: RE: Is this the Free-Format that we asked for? John, The purpose of the semi-colon is to indicate the logical end of a program statement. You mis-quote George Farr's example slightly. Here is what you "quote": > For i = 0 to num; > x = y(i); > EndFor; Here is an exact quote: His example points out, implicitly, why the semi-colon is needed. There are multi-line statements that would be ambiguous without the explicit end-of-statement notation. As for the GOTO, I say be gone with it! I wish it had never been part of the language to begin with. Just my 2 cents...
