Frankly I think I would wonder why I was employing any programmer who was confused by their use. If you think about it for a moment, the only sensible way to define a work variable that's a binary field (OPM RPG) is through a data structure. If I were to come across a data structure containing one subfield - I'd kind of wonder what was going on. If you weren't specifically aware that the generated MI took advantage of binary fields for array indexes, it wouldn't make a lot of sense. And again, the 'performance advantage' is so minimal as to not make it worth the effort.
