I have a long satirical reply to this about how "very experienced" people
are forgetful - but it doesn't matter. Most people think that, in our
field, the past doesn't matter and that there isn't anything of value to be
learned from history - imagine calling a machine "historical" that only 20
years ago was close to state of the art.

If it really is System 3 code, it should contain the justification for IF
and DO. It should justify the demise of indicators. It might use program
described files. When the input and output specs for several other programs
that used the same files are examined, that code will justify externally
described files. It should teach that function and program calls permit
complex applications by permitting local complexity and variables to be
isolated. You may see more craft and personal style in the code - that was
more necessary in those days of small resources.

Well, that was fun! Let's go and write a system in C, RPG, binder language,
HTML, CGI-Perl, XML, CL, DDS, and SQL. Then we can pat ourselves on the
back for mastering all these languages and making them work together! Isn't
progress wonderful?
