<snip> The rules would be defined in the ILE environment, not in each language. The rule triggers at the static or dynamic check. The rule may be deactivated if the programmer knows (or thinks they know) what they are doing. The rules are an externally visible attribute of each module or program and can be extracted using an API query. <SNIP> Richard Jackson Richard,Jon, Barb, et al Could something like PCML be used to externally define the interface between functions? On the Sys/38 and AS/400 I used externally defined D/S's as a feeble attempt to externalize the definition of the interface to function to function call. The interface definition was external to the programs so each language idiosyncrasies could be mapped (like you said) by the environment(ILE) to map character variables to Null strings an such. Would this type of an approach be more inline with Java etc? My parameter list in RPG would be defined externally like I was trying to do with Ext. D/S's with default values, etc abeit with limited success. BTW, this is why I pushed a long time ago for having subfields of an ext. desc D/S initialized from the DDS default values so they could be defined external to the programs.
