Here's something I do to accomplish what you want. 

Subfile line layout

Name               Number             Department                  Date
John Doe         123-4567            Whatever                   01/01/99       
Jane Doe          987-6543           Whereever                 12/31/00

Data structure in program

SFLLineDS           DS
  SFLName                    20     (or Name)
  SFLNumber                 10     
  SFLDepartment            30     (or Department) 
  SFLDate                      10

                  Clear                    SFLLine
                  Eval   SFLName = Name
                  Eval   SFLNumber = %EditW(Number:'   -    0')
                  Eval   SFLDepartment = Department
                  Eval   SFLDate = %Char(Date)
                  Eval   SFLLine = SFLLineDS
                  Write SFL001

Just code a alpha column in your subfile and move the correct value
