Why are you running down an array as a solution? If his application needs
lots of editing and all sorts of attention on a regular basis then he has
to go to some sort of a mail merge solution anyway. If the letter writing
is an occasional thing with rare modifications then having the whole piece
in one easily found object makes sense. An array at the end of a 20-line
RPG program allows green screen full page editing which isn't available
any other way without writing a file-editing program and file definitions
with all the attending documentation. What could easily be a 20-line
program suddenly blossoms into a whole application that takes a 1/2 week
to write, test, and install.

You received a lot of interesting ideas for your question, but IMO there
were lots of suggestions that were really bad. It bugs me when
programmers design a solution using user spaces, arrays, API's, etc, that
no one will ever be able to figure out down the road when a simple
solution (like a physical file) will do the job just fine!
At our company we have lots of tricky solutions which could have been set
up more simply, but instead cause everyone lots of headaches.
