The CYYMMDD convention, as typically used by OS/400, does not support
dates prior to Jan 1 1900. This format then would not be a good choice
for historical data.

Along the same lines, the Lilian format does not support dates prior to
Oct 14 1582; most 4-digit year formats do not support years prior to
0001AD; Scaliger format does not support dates prior to 4713BC, 2-digit
year format (as used by most of OS/400) does not support years prior to
1940, etc. Date format choices should always be made within the
context of anticipated date usage.
