Barbara,
I've responded to Gary Gutherie's request for a job log, so that might also help you.
In answer to your questions,
1. FileA's length is 3155, and WF4's length is 795
2. WF4 is shared by virtue of an OVRDBF FILE(FileA) TOFILE(QTEMP/WF4) LVLCHK(*NO)
OVRSCOPE(*ACTGRPDFN) SHARE(*YES) and WF4 is opened by and OPNQRYF.
3. The diagnostic message in the joblog prior to the MCH message is CPF4123, "Open options
ignored for shared open". Type code is 6. (The record length is greater than the the record length
used on the first open.) (Sounds like the OPEN by OPNQRYF is doing something strange ?!)
4. Thanks for the FYI about LVLCHK(*NO) and program described files !!!!!!!

A few more questions that might help the forum diagnose the problem:
- what is the record length of WF4?
- is the file shared and opened by an earlier program than RPGA?
- are you getting any diagnostic messages when the file is opened?
By the way, why are you using lvlchk(*no)? It's not required for
a program-described file
