This isn't possible on "dumb" terminals, and emulations on programmable workstations (PCs) emulate a terminal. Make clear that the cursor position is checkable even in a non-display field (ruler or position display at the bottom). Maybe the security-approach settles the issue: It is much easier for somebody standing behind to see how many stars a user enters in such a field. And that makes guessing easier.
