Jim, As always, there are pros and cons. When we moved from the S/36 to the AS/400, we had a sort of internal religious war over internal vs. external (I was somewhere in the middle, could see advantages as well as disadvantages). The outcome was that the existing applications stuck to internal descriptions and that a new application would be built using external descriptions. I was one of the developers of this new application; now I am technically responsible for this application. A few years ago, I decided to convert this application to internal descriptions, for the reasons I wrote (and one more reason: our programmers are used to using internal descriptions). We would love to use externally described files, if only we would be able to explicitly name the fields we want (like it is possible in the output specs). Who uses 'SELECT *' in embedded SQL? In SQL it is common practice to name the fields you want.
