There is no requirement that the mascot be  an animal.  It could be a 
pretty girl, a volcano, a grizzled prospector, a fresh breeze, a tall 
beer, an Australian, a body part, a sailboat, an insect, a glacier, or a 
set of railroad tracks.

That's just an opinion of course.

Jim,

lepidoptera have compound eyes...don't qualify...:)  Ditto diptera,
hymenoptera, etc...:) 

Didn't know we were going to get into entomology on a RPG list...:)
Geezuz, this brings back the days I used to do eco system sims...in PL/I
and Fortran...OY!
