Just to add to this, for every new intereactive job the local data area
(LDA) is created and then deleted automatically when the job ends. In an
interactive session every batch job that runs would create its' own LDA and
only programs/procedures running in that job could access it. At the end
of the job the LDA is deleted. It's is a method of passing values between
programs in the same job. This method is not recommended but widely used
in large applications, so consult the application documentation for more
information.

Hope this helps

Subject: Re: LDA Question

Joel,

The LDA is 1024 characters in length and is specific to an individual job
which the system creates. The contents of the LDA can be changed using CL
command CHGDTAARA or in RPG using the IN and OUT commands.

What some people do is use an external file definition to define the
structure of the LDA for a particular program or application.

I hope this helps!!
