Ack, in my suggestion about using atol, I forgot  you should call
atol(%trim(number)).  The trim is what makes it work (converts "000123"
to "000123" and "   123" to "123" which both come out to 123.

If these are decimals with fractions, you need to use atof (ascii to float).
