Oooh, now that you mention that Raul, I can think of a real good way to do it like you state. Do the cycle program defined, read it as alpha, then do call to atol on it. As I understand it, atol will convert both "000123" and " 123" to 123. If there is garbage in the field, it will convert it to 0, if the first character other than white space is a character, or a short number, depending on the garbage.
