I didn't understand why and had no one to ask. One reference file has one physical file referring to it. With the logicals referring to the physical file. I had to change the dates in these files to the L data type and add a couple other fields. Not understanding why the inconsistency I did away with the reference files. It makes sense now why a reference file would work with several different physical files referring to it but just one? It doesn't sound as if I have caused any harm down the road by my actions.
