The Main Storage Processor for the real S/36 (and also the S/34) could only handle zoned decimal numbers. The only instructions for handling these numbers were add and subtract, with no decimal places. There was only a "factor 2" and result field. "Factor 2" could only be up to 16 digits. The result field had to be at least the length of "factor 2" and could be up to 15 digits longer. The compiler had to generate multiple instructions to handle anything more complex than this. The compiler put routines into the programs to use byte handling capabilities for packing and unpacking numeric fields if needed. Ken Southern Wine and Spirits of Nevada, Inc.
