You could even add the format code as a second parameter:

Eval  PrintDate = %OutDate(DateField:'*MDY')

Well, in this case I would probably write a service program,
that accepted a date field as a parameter, and returned a
character field.  As a Bif I could say:

Eval  PrintDate = %OutDate(DateField)

which would make it nice and clean.
