I apologize in advance for this agendized speech, but it is related.

Since I am in the middle of a JDE ERP project, which BTW is like, say,
getting your first job at a company where your boss turns out to be an
a-hole (mine isn't BTW), and he says:

Here's your first project. It's simple. We need a new order entry
system...and since you've been to school, I want it done with a bunch of
those neat subfiles where you validate while entering, embedded help...and
provide the means so that when a user pressed f4 on a field, a simple
window pops up showing the valid values...and a simple modular
feature...oh, we need it by the 30th.

GOD HOW I LONG FOR RPG.

Yes. Standards. Standards. Standards. Whatever they are, do it.

Looking back, our shop was never more productive than about 2 years prior
to the ERP talk. Good programmers, or technicians I should say (an
important difference), standards, teamwork, metrics, a manager who
understands technical people, and small egos; provides for the best
environment for producing top quality code for the company.

No matter what, I'll always be subscribed to this list. RPG is kinda old,
but man, when you code a calc statement, IT DOES WHAT THE MANUAL SAYS IT
WILL DO. And when you update the AS/400 database, IT DOES WHAT THE MANUAL
SAYS IT WILL DO.
