The way I usually do this is to create a 1 char field for any field that
is defined as char(*), and set up a field to point to the data once the
API has been called.

eg. 

DSRcv   1A

DSData  32767A          Based(Ptr1)

CALL QWCRSVAL using DSRcv as the parameter for receiver variable

after the call

EVAL Ptr1=%addr(DSRcv), and DSData will contain the data returned from
the API.
