As one of the three people who responded to have vs. had, I say "don't worry
about it."  I don't know about others, but I _know_ I'm risking my life
every time I open my mouth.  My wife and several previous employers (I
actually still get along with all of them) will back me up on this one. <g>

Your post, or at least the part about have vs. had showed what I think are
two very common traits in programmers--strong background and interest in
grammar and syntax, and a strong desire to be precise.
