I may have mentioned this before (stop me if you've heard this one), but I
took a class in 8086 assembler a few years ago.  The teacher was a veteran
of 8 bit machine words.  When we got to base conversion he said:  "When I
want to convert decimal to hex or decimal to binary or vice versa, I always
convert it to octal first."  He could do it in his head about as fast as I
can add one digit numbers.  I relied on my calculator.
