I sent a "more info" and a thanks to the responses to my question to the group...I'm on V4R4, which is the real reason for my question.  The group suggested %editc, it works fine, but I thought the %char should've worked??

A crap design if I do say so myself. I think I shamed them into support decimal values. Anyway, they don't PTF things back so until you go to V4R4 it is pretty useless.
