You probably want %editc() or %editw().
Seems to me %char() is for time, date, and graphic fields.  Intuitive, eh?

%editc() works like %editc(charstring : 'Z') where the character in quotes
is a valid edit code.
%editw() works the same way, but the second parm is a valid edit word.
