David, I quite agree. I will optimize all and put on to our dedicated transaction processor when we go live. What is "caching of variables" or "profiling" and how? I never heard of these terms before. I am on V3R7M0. Are they something new? I have tried several ways to perform the conversion from ASCII to EBCDIC, of which the call to qdcxlate seemed the poorest performer. I am now coding the code page APIs which was recommended off line. I will let you know how that is. The ILE environment is extremely new to this shop and me. Thanks for all the help, Christopher K. A message to this list from Bruce Vining sent on 8/19 lists several options. However, there are many techniques that can be employed to speed up code. These include caching of variables, setting access, optimization, and profiling. Because timing is critical in your application, you will need to do more than simply find the best algorithm. You need to ensure that system resources are available when you need them which is not really an RPG question. You will want to ensure that your conversion job has adequate resources and that those resources will not be stolen by another job.
