The system always passes you the before and after pictures of the
record buffer. You would then make any necessary changes to the
"after" record. This is returned to the database manager and your
update is actually part of the original update. If you actually tried to
do the update in your trigger, then you could cause recursion. My
triggers always check for specific fields that change and skip any
processing unless required.
