  • Subject: Searching fixed format source for field references WAS: RPG IV and CF-spec "keep it IBM"

I would say that I lost the ability to search for things in a specific
column when we got the CALL opcode. Scan for a field in a PLIST that gets
CALLed in several subroutines. You'll find only one hit (in the PLIST) even
though the field changes value with every CALL. How about data structures
with overlapping subfields? Renamed database fields? I think that the
global scope of RPG fields makes it very difficult to work off of a source
listing alone.

I rely on compiler listing cross reference information to tell me when a
field is modified/referenced. I keep the listing in my outq and refer to it
often. I never miss references that way, but I often miss with a simple
source member scan.
