Peter, Assuming that you have issued an UPDATE or WRITE with SFLNXTCHG enabled (as Buck mentioned) the next most likely item is to ensure that you position to the start of the subfile prior to issuing the READC. You can achieve this by setting the RRN field for the subfile to 1 (think of it as the equivalent of a *LOVAL SETLL for the subfile).
