Hi Brian, If you're using a program described file, you can simply make a single character field that encompases the entire record :) If you're using externally defined files, you can make a data structure with the same "external definition" as your file. >From there, you can either move that data structure into a different field -- or -- another technique would be to use a multiple occurrance DS, and simply switch occurrances before doing your CHAIN, then switch it back... Of course, if all you're truly doing is "moving the file pointer" and you don't need to read the record, it'd be more efficient to use SETLL or SETGT (as appropriate) instead of CHAIN.
