This concept is sometime referred as capitalism, free enterprise, market
force, supply-demand etc.  Back at the beginning of this century, workers got
so tired of getting shafted, they organized into groups to demand better
wages and working conditions (code/400 for the railroad gang, so to speak).
There was considerable resistance, but thanks to these groups (nowadays
referred to as unions), our standard of living has increased considerably.
