  • Subject: RE: Printing to a laser printer via ICF files

The topic of printing in general is very broad, and difficult to treat well
in an email forum. Perhaps if you explained your problem in a bit more
detail we'd be able to help you out better, but here's some general advice
for you to start working with: Ordinarily, we'd use printer files for laser
output, but I suppose you may have an unusual connection requiring
communications. If you haven't used printer files before, see the OS/400
Printer Device Programming manual for examples. For communications files,
it really depends on the exact nature of the device you're trying to
communicate with. Normally, communications files are used to communicate to
a program running on another computer. Start with the OS/400 ICF
Programming guide. You may need to refer to the OS/400 Asynchronous
Communications guide as well - it depends on how your printer is connected
to the AS/400.

Try to find the answers to these questions:
1) What type of laser printer is this (e.g. Xerox 8100, HP4si)?
2) How is it connected (e.g. Twinax, Ethernet, Client Access)?
3) What sort of output are you looking to create (simple text, barcodes,
graphics)?
