I had to do this for a long ago application. I did use a field in the file to 
store the current locks User ID to display in a message. I also created a 
small utility to routinely clear this field in all records in the file should 
any problems occur. It worked. There is probably a better way, but it showed 
who had the record to who ever was trying to get it, and was easily cleared 
with the utility. So long ago....
