Make sure to set the condition of the indicator (on or off) before you write the
record to the subfile.  Most of the time people set the indicator outside the 
loop
in which the records are written.  In that case, all the records take the 
indicator
value as it was before the loop started.  In your case, compare the date to zero
before the write to the subfile inside the loop writing the subfile records.  
Also,
another way to avoid the zero date is to use the editword '  /  /   ' instead of
editcode Y.  Also, investigate program to system fields.  This way you can avoid
indicators altogether.
