It sounds like you are using RPG400.  If you use RPG IV
this restriction goes away.  If you absolutely MUST use RPG400,
define a data structure with the name of your 512 byte field.
This should override the length to 512.  If you define an
array:

E                    DTA       512  1 
IFLD512      DS                            512 
I                                        1 512 DTA 

then you can manipulate individual bytes of the 512 byte
field fairly easily.  You can see that this is something
of a hassle in RPG400...
