My main point about openWRT was and is that it will run on almost any device that can be "flashed" with open source.  This includes older devices as well as many newer ones.

So, you do not necessarily have to "shop for a mesh router" per se -- those usually carry a price premium.

Doesn't really help when the hardware is failing.
