I don't have any experience with the no playback with no internet connection, so not sure what to say about that. Would only ever be an issue if the internet went out, I guess.

As for the tuners, we live about 45 miles SE of downtown Kansas City, and I get all the major channels in just fine. Using a $40 RCA antenna with no signal booster.

My only complaint would be how long it takes to tune into a channel when first starting up: 15-30 seconds on average, so it's not "instant-on". Other than that, it's been great.

Also, I don't have a monthly fee: I paid for the $150 lifetime guide fee up front. Seemed the way to go. So it'll just be $20 a *year* for their premium service.

Thanks
Bob

Thanks Bob,

I heard from a friend that the only downside he had found to Tablo was that he couldn't even playback recordings if the device was not connected to the internet. Plus of >course it has a monthly fee - but then so does Tivo.

Do you have any idea of how good the tuners on the Tablo are? I have a couple of US stations that are marginal signal.

Been using our 4-tuner model since January this year and love it. AND - it's a Canada based company, so you should love it too!

Subject: [PCTECH] Alternatives to Tivo OTA Device

My poor Tivo Bolt died this weekend and I'm trying to decide whether to replace it with another Tivo or get something else.

Tivo no longer sell into Canada but will support existing customers - but it does mean a trip to the US to buy one.

Current setup has the Tivo recording from my antenna with various streaming services providing the rest of my needs.

Initially I was looking at an Amazon Recast - but they are not supported in Canada for some god forsaken reason.

I do have a couple of older Macs that I could load some flavour of
custom Linux on if that is an option

So what is anybody else using?
