If you don't already do this, look at filtering and labels and archiving.

I filter extensively. I have 108 different labels defined, organized as I
see fit, and probably 95% of my emails are automatically filtered into
these labels.

For example, all midrange-l emails are filtered into a label (drum roll)
named Midrange. RPG400-L into label RPG400-L. PCTECH-L into . . . you get
the idea. Customer order acknowledgements go into label CustOrds.
Everything from the bank goes into PNC. Emails regarding backups go into
Backups. Everything that is filtered is also archived so the only things
ever in my inbox are unexpected emails. The possibilities are almost
endless. And I have every label set to "show if unread" so I only "see"
that label if there is unread mail, otherwise it is hidden. Makes it very
easy (for me) to read what I want first. YMMV.

There is also a Preview Pane which I use all the time.

Thanks Dave, that's true and I've tried both Outlook (which is the best so
far) and Thunderbird which was crashing multiple times a day in the past.
Also you have to keep updating them which also drives me nuts.

Oh well I guess I live with the snowflake inspired awful interface.......

You could use a different client with an IMAP link to your google
account. The sorting would be within the client using whatever it
offers.

As good as gmail is for filtering/labeling, it stinks at sorting.

Jim -

There's not exactly a sort by date - you can do the following (but I
don't
think it's exactly what you're trying to do)

In the upper-right corner, just above your messages, there's a number
that
shows how many emails are in the current folder (ex. 1-20 of 5000).
Hover
the mouse over the email counter until a small menu drops down and
choose
Oldest. You're taken to the last page of emails in that folder; the
oldest
message is listed at the bottom.

Thanks,

In the web based UI, is there a way to force emails to show oldest to
newest? My display is newest to oldest and it drives me nuts since I
always want the oldest message to review first. .
