I am deeply fond of that search, especially as opposed to drilling through the menus for various programs, or trying find the folder with my daily to do document in it.

Well, you don't have to drill down to the exact folder. The search
feature in Explorer will look in subfolders. I do pretty much all my
searching from "Documents", if I'm using Explorer. My guess is that it
is basically the same search as the one you're used to, except without
voice activation option and without Internet search (which slow things
down and introduce unwanted matches, which is why I hate it). It's
true that if your workflow doesn't involve having at least one
Explorer window open all the time, then it can be an extra step.

But better than anything Microsoft includes with Windows is the
program called Everything. Sits in the notification area so it's
always accessible without having to hunt. And it is freakishly fast if
all you need is to search by the name of a file (as opposed to
contents).
