Target practice has been considered, but the previous employer's PC guy put
the encryption software on the box. She just wants to know if there is stuff
on it she should know about, from a widow's perspective.

If the husband never shared the password for his disk encryption with her
you may want to consider offering to take the drive to the range and
finalizing it. Not something I'd share with her but maybe there's a
reason he never shared it with her and this could be a sleeping dog you
might want to let lie. Just let her remember the nice things about him.
