Have you opened up Windows Update and ran a check for updates? Perhaps it has checked but not downloaded them? Try doing a manual check/install then reboot when it's done. Keep doing this until it doesn't find anything. Do you still have the icon?

For the last two nights, when I go to shut down, there's the little icon
indicating that there are updates to install. No big deal - except it never
happens. That is, no message such as "Installing 1 of a gazillion updates."
The PC just goes off.

The icon is still there, as I "speak." Is this normal? If so, why?
Inquiring minds want to know.
