I think a very complete virus scan is in order. Additionally a Barracuda
(or similar) system to monitor and block web sites the folks might choose to
go to. It's also likely that several other file associations in Win7 have
been compromised.
I would strongly suspect a hijacking program or malware of some sort on that
box (and now your entire network)

Subject: [PCTECH] 5250 Comm Icon Wants To Run Internet Explorer
It's a tossup whether to post this here or to Midrange-L, but it seems like
more of a PC problem so here goes.
First, the PC is at Win 7.
We have several retail outlets, which run a POS system written for the PC.
But I have to install System i Access so that the store managers can perform
inquiries and such for their specific store. Yesterday one of the store
managers contacted me and said that, whenever she double-clicks the 5250
icon (labeled "Process") it starts Internet Explorer; it even has the IE
icon now.
Well, I logged into the store's PC and re-created the 5250 connection, which
is saved to the desktop and replacing the current process. No joy; it still
wanted to run IE. So I deleted the IE icon from the desktop first and
re-created the 5250 connection again. @#$%, it still wanted to run IE and
had the IE icon.
This morning I changed the properties for the icon so that it runs
PCSWS.exe. Now it starts the 5250 communications program, though the
desktop's icon is not the one that the managers are used to, but she can
live with that.
The question is: What the heck is going on? The only thing I can think of
is that the file association for .ws objects has been changed to IE. I
admit that I have forgotten where the associations are set (a senior
moment). But is that really the cause of the problem or is there something
else going on here?
