I'd estimate between 5 & 20 watts for each device:
- Cable modem
- Standard router
And common add-ons:
- VOIP adapter
- Additional small switch

A modest UPS should provide 45 minutes or more of continuous run time.

That said, if your UPS battery is more than a couple of years old it
probably won't provide the same run time as it did when new. Like most
batteries they do degrade over time.

Just how many amps does a cable modem and a router draw? I am thinking
next to none. The UPS we have in our computer room at work can keep
several racks of equipment going for over an hour. That little battery in
your pda can keep your PDA running all day, why can't the several times
larger battery in a UPS not keep a stinking small cable modem and a router
going for hours? Granted, if you start plugging in a large laser printer,
ancient power sucking desktop computer, desk lamp, etc all into that UPS
you're going to draw it down about as fast as a former coworker's UPS
here. He plugged in an electric heater and wanted to know why it didn't
last for crap.

Thanks for all the comments.

I had a feeling that there were probably repeaters etc. in the line that
could be impacted. We rarely get major outages and when we do (like the
last one) it covered 80% of the city (population about 300,000) so the
chance that the cable would have worked are slim to none anyway I suspect.

Looks like UPS is only worth it for the surge protection (which I already
have) - chances that it would allow on-going connection during any
significant outage are probably slim and the money would be better spent
on another hot-spot - except of course that we are in a virtual black-spot
here ... can't win!

Thanks again to all.
