Can't you set Automatic Updates to notify only?
I don't do any updates automatically, only notify.

Subject: [PCTECH] Stop windows from doing big downloads?
Date: Wed, Aug 14, 2013 10:07
Folks:
Does anyone know if there is a way to tell Windows *NOT* to use a wifi
connection to do big downloads?
I just picked up a pay as you go wifi hotspot and I don't want my laptop
to download updates when using it for connectivity.
Thanks!
david
