I agree with you. We have to be responsible and sometimes, only going back to the "basic steps" is how it works. This reminds me ... I was watching The Avengers last night (again) and I liked this part (do you remember this?):

... so do not worry. Sometimes, doing this the "old fashion way" can bring the right results.
We have our laptop and we all use it on the dining table (lid closed when we are dining, of course) but we want to be as covered as we can. But we also have cell phones, a kindle and technology is evolving. Like the other guys have said, we are all surrounded by technology and you do not want to over-protect them; however, understanding that, I have been looking for a more "preventive software tool" rather than "reacting to the facts tool". I found that for Firefox and Google, there was a recommended add-in called FoxFilter but there are some others as well... I may need to install them, test, and keep on doing that type of thing until I can find one I can manage close to my reqmts... Other thing that I was thinking is that I have Win7, so I can create a new account for him and then limit the account with the Family Safety program. May not be perfect but I may have at least something ...
I believe that we all agree that we need to get totally involved with them: showing them sincere love but being kind of a "firewall" at the same time, at least as a father. When they older, ready to make decisions in life for themselves, you would like those decisions to be made based upon a healthy character... and yeap, this is one day at a time ...

I am right there with you as I have a 12 year old getting more and more on the internet - limited and watched carefully. I have taken the approach of restricting what I can and helping to instruct as best as possible, but realizing that no solution is perfect and if he wants to get around it, he can probably find a way. I feel helping him to understand at this age what is appropriate and why will serve him better in the future, although flat out not allowing access to certain sites is also wise.
Yes, I know I will sound old fashioned and behind the times - tough - it is my kid, my responsibility.
I have a Netgear router that all internet traffic in my house (Wi-Fi or hard wired) goes through. It has some nice settings to filter and reject certain sites based on content, and different levels of that content. You might want to take a look at that. Password protected and unless wiring is physically changed, hard to get around.
Making sure settings on YouTube, Google, and Bing searches (some of the most popular) are set properly can also help, although not perfect, again.

Well, I have two boys, 8 and 5, and I have started to look around for good parental controls on browsers. I not only need to have websites blocked but I need to exclude specific words to be searched and specific images to be blocked. If I use Yahoo SafeSearch Filter, I can switch to IMAGES and see stuff. I would say the same thing with Google SafeSearch:
a) IE - Microsoft has the Windows Live FAMILY SAFETY but that does not do all that I need. I do not think it blocks words I am searching in.
b) FireFox - No built in PC features (sad). I know that there are add-ins available but I am looking for the best one, based on your experience, if any.
c) Chrome - No built in PC features (sad). I know that there are add-ins available but I am looking for the best one, based on your experience, if any.

I know that the solution is not perfect and is a combination of tools, wise teaching, and building integrity and trust between your child and you. I just want to have a sense of what you guys are exposed and have experience with.
